Caring for Your New Kitchen Countertops

| | Kitchen Countertops, Tips

kitchen countertops twin cities northstar granite topsGetting new kitchen countertops at your Twin Cities home is exciting. Chances are, you got them because you had your kitchen renovated, and you are probably enjoying your newly remodeled space. Granite is one of the most popular stones used for countertops, so we thought we would take the time to discuss how to properly care for them. After all, with the right type of care and maintenance, your new granite kitchen countertops could last you a lifetime.
  • About once a day or so, make sure you wipe your kitchen countertops down with some warm water and a soft white cloth. You can use a mild cleaner on it if you want, but make sure it is non-abrasive, bleach-free, ammonia-free and non-acidic. But, for the most part, you will not need any type of cleaning product for your countertops. Water and a soft cloth will do.
  • While granite is stain resistant, that does not mean it is impossible to stain. We recommend that you mop up liquids as soon as possible when you spill anything on your new kitchen countertops.
  • Make sure everyone in your home knows the rules about your new granite kitchen countertops: no one is allowed to sit on them, no one is allowed to do art projects that use glue or paint or other harsh chemicals and no one is allowed to place extremely heavy objects on them. Granite is an incredibly strong stone. It is one of the strongest stones in the world by far. But those are still some precautions you should take to ensure your granite kitchen countertops last for as long as possible.
  • When you place any hot objects on your granite kitchen countertops like sauce pans or other items straight out of the oven, use hot pads or trivets underneath. Granite kitchen countertops are heat resistant, but this does not mean they will not burn if hot items are left on them for too long.
  • If you are ever worried that your kitchen countertops need to be resealed, drop some water on them. If the water beads up, your counters are fine. If the water is absorbed, then you should look into having them resealed.

How to Care for Quartz Kitchen Counters

| | Quartz, Tips

northstar granite tops kitchen counters twin citiesOne of the biggest perks about quartz kitchen counters in your Twin Cities home is how easy they are to care for and maintain. This makes them a great fit for homes and families of all sizes, so here are a few tips on how to keep your new quartz kitchen counters looking their best.

On a daily basis, clean your quartz kitchen counters with water and a soft cloth or paper towel. You can use a cleaner if you want to – just be sure it’s non-abrasive and doesn’t contain any bleach.

If anything is spilled, make sure to wipe it up immediately or as soon as possible after it happens. This goes especially for dark liquids like coffee and red wine. If something does end up staining, you can use a non-abrasive cleaning pad if you want. Be sure to use it as directed and test a small spot on an out of the way part of your kitchen counters first before you use it on a more conspicuous spot.

Be sure to use cutting boards when cutting anything on your new kitchen counters, and use trivets or hot pads under anything that is hot. While your new quartz kitchen counters are scratch and burn resistant, you should still make sure you do what you can to protect them.

Finally, do not use any cleaners that are abrasive, and never use bleach on your quartz counters either. Quartz counters are bacteria resistant as well, so you shouldn’t have to disinfect them. You also should not use wax or polish on them either. These products could dull the finish and cause permanent damage.

Your loved ones should know that they are not allowed to use paint, glue or permanent markers on or near your new quartz kitchen counters. If any of these get on your countertops, they can be removed, but they also might permanently damage the counters’ finish, so it is best to err on the side of caution and do crafts and similar projects elsewhere.

These are just a few suggestions on how to care for your new counters. After we install them, we will give you more detailed instructions on how to care for and maintain them.

Dos and Don’ts: Caring for Your New Granite Kitchen Countertops

| | Granite, Tips

northstar granite tops kitchen countertops minneapolisIf you just had new granite kitchen countertops put in your Minneapolis home, you and your family are probably already enjoying them. New kitchen countertops can really change the look and feel of the room. While we have given advice before on how to care for these types of countertops, we thought we would give a few more tips on some dos and don’ts of caring for your new counters. Do:
  • Do make sure you clean up all spills as soon as possible after they happen. Your new kitchen countertops are stain resistant, but you should still make sure anything that is spilled on them is wiped up and not left to air dry. Darker liquids like red wine could leave a stain if they end up drying on your new counters. Simply use some water and a soft and dry cloth to clean up spills.
  • Do consider getting a granite cleaner for your new kitchen countertops. There are several options on the market today, and we can advise you on which ones to use. Just make sure you carefully follow the instructions on the bottle.
  • Do practice good habits. Keep an eye on things and make sure spills are wiped up. If anything hot is placed on your kitchen countertops, be sure there is a hot pad or trivet underneath. If anyone needs to paint or glue anything, do not allow them to do it on your kitchen countertops. Even if you put a towel or newspaper underneath, paint or glue could still get on the counters.
Don’t:
  • Don’t always assume that your new granite kitchen countertops need to be resealed on a set schedule. Sometimes, they can go years without being resealed. Sometimes, they will never need to be resealed. There is an easy way you can tell if your kitchen countertops should be resealed: put a drop of water on them. If the water is absorbed, then you should have them resealed. If the water beads up, you don’t have to worry about having them resealed.
  • Don’t assume that stains and etches can never be removed. There are several methods of getting rid of both of these types of eye sores. You can call us for assistance if you need to.
